Twins hang on for 6-5 win over Rangers

(Minneapolis, MN) -- Michael Cuddyer and Denard Span plated two runs apiece as the Twins completed a three-game sweep of the Rangers with a 6-5 win at Target Field. Orlando Hudson and J.J. Hardy plated runs for the Twins, who have won eight of their last 10 games. Nick Blackburn fired seven innings of two-run ball to improve to 9-and-9. Two runs scored in the ninth with Matt Capps on the mound, but he held on for his ninth save. Matt Treanor had two RBI for the Rangers, who have dropped six of their last eight. C.J. Wilson allowed all six runs over five-and-a-third innings to fall to 14-and-6.
Game ends on strange play

(Minneapolis, MN) -- The final out of Minnesota's 6-5 win over the Rangers on Sunday came on a strange play. Texas runner Michael Young was round third base with the potential tying run when Orlando Hudson knocked the batted ball down behind second base. Young decided to return to third base once the ball was knocked down. Hudson tried to throw him out heading back to the bag, but Young made contact with his third base coach Dave Anderson, which is an automatic out and the game ended.
Twins make roster adjustments

(Minneapolis, MN) -- The Twins made several roster moves yesterday. The club optioned right-handed pitcher Rob Delaney to Class AAA Rochester, while also designating righty Matt Fox for assignment. Both were called up to help fill in after the pitching staff was depleted due to injury and extra inning games this past week. Meanwhile, the Twins called up one of their top prospects Ben Revere. Revere is an outfielder who played this season at Class AA New Britain.
Vikings sign players to practice squad

(Eden Prairie, MN) -- The Vikings signed seven players their practice squad yesterday, including former Golden Gophers Marcus Sherels (SHARE-uhls) of Rochester and receiver Logan Payne. Also inked to practice squad contracts were safety Colt Anderson of Montana, guard Thomas Austin of Clemson, receiver Freddie Brown of Utah, fullback Ryan D'Imperio of Rutgers, and defensive lineman Tremaine Johnson of Louisiana State.
Favre ready to return to New Orleans

(Eden Prairie, MN) -- Vikings quarterback Brett Favre is ready to return to the scene where Minnesota lost last year's NFC Title Game 31-28. The Vikings are at New Orleans to open the NFL season on Thursday night. Minnesota lost a heart-breaking overtime game at the Louisiana Superdome last January and Favre says the loss still stings, but he has to move on to this year. Favre says he expects the Saints to try to pressure him much the way they did in last year's game. Kickoff on Thursday night is set for 7:30 p.m.
Gopher hoopsters win in Canada

(Victoria, British Columbia) -- The University of Minnesota men's basketball team finished its exhibition trip to Canada with a 3-and-oh record after last 101-67 victory over the University of Victoria. Senior Blake Hoffarber of Minnetonka and junior Devoe Joseph of Pickering, Ontario each hit five three-point baskets to score 19-points apiece in the win. They helped break open a close game with a strong second half effort.
