City of Willmar looks at fixing North 71 crossing
03/16/2010
Fixing the dangerous intersection by the Kandiyohi County Law Enforcement Center highlights the Willmar street improvement projects for 2010. The city council last night held a hearing for the projects, approved the list and will next order plans, specs and bids, then set an assessment hearing. Willmar City Administrator Michael Schmit says the city wants to improve the intersection of North Highway 71 and County Road 24, near the law enforcement center, which has been the scene of many injury and even fatal accidents over the years. Schmit says after a consultant came-up with a slate of options for the intersection, the city came up with a plan to eliminate crossing traffic, but it doesn't jive with the option favored by Kandiyohi County and MnDot. Schmit says the city is still trying to get the county and state on-board with the city's plan. Schmit says the city also wants to fix the ragged Southwest 7th Street by Kennedy Elementary School, and extending Willmar Avenue across the old airport land. Further development of the expanded industrial park has been held-up by the FAA, which still owns the old airport land, and by the state Historical Preservation office, which wants the old John Rice Airport Terminal and Hangar preserved, which Schmit says could foil a sale of the building to Berge Fabricating. He says all parties involved need to get together and talk about the implications. Total estimated cost of the 2010 street improvements is just over 3.7 million dollars
