Governor Pawlenty yesterday chopped 320-million dollars from
the bonding bill. Higher education takes the
biggest hit -- more than 100-million dollars in construction projects. Senator Joe Gimse says the 14 million dollar Phase 2 Improvement Project at Ridgewater College in Willmar got cut. Two years ago the legislature appropriated money for Phase 1 of improvements at Ridgewater, but apparently that didn't guarantee Phase 2 would be funded. Gimse says Willmar, which also did not get funding for a veterans facility, is not the only community that did not get it's projects approved or had them cut. Also trimmed from the billion-dollar bill: 50-million to expand civic centers in
Rochester, Mankato and St. Cloud. Pawlenty is in Florida for a political
event and his veto message was delivered to the Minnesota House clerk today.
Pawlenty pared down the bill with line-item vetoes, saying "state
government must live within its means."
