Budget cuts approved...students want Mara saved
03/10/2010
Despite the protests of dozens of Willmar High School students, the Willmar School Board Monday night implemented 1.75 million dollars in budget cuts to this year's budget. Willmar High School Senior Elly Kopacek says about 35 students attended to ask the district not to cut music programs in the 4th and 5th grades, and to spare the job of Bryan Mara. Mara is the marching band instructor at the high school, and marching band will be cut after this year. Despite the support for Mara, his name was included on the list of staff reductions. Kopacek says she was disappointed. Kopacek says she and other students will be involved in efforts to encourage people to vote for an operating levy referendum this fall which will hopefully enable the district to undo many of this week's cuts.
